Yay, First Blog Post!! ^^
Hi guys, so my name is Brendan Pierce. I really don't know what to put in a first blog post, but I thought that I would write about my summer thus far.
Currently, I am a college student attending Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. It's the most awesome college that I have ever attended, so I was a bit sad during the last week when everybody was packing out to leave. Since Macalester college hosts students from a wide range of both domestic and international backgrounds, I knew that once I left I wouldn't be seeing many of the faces that have become so familiar over the course of my last year, Freshman Year. Or First Year, as I prefer to call it.
The last day of storage was my last full day at Macalester. It was chaos!! Students running around from all over, trying to get their boxes into the right places at the right times. Some students had enormous boxes, which were bigger than themselves. Other students had incredibly small boxes that weighed a tonne. Once that was over, I took a nice hot shower and got ready to return to where my family lives: Virginia!
So, I decided to spend my whole summer working in Washington D.C. for Environment Virginia (EV). I went to an Orientation-Like-Thingy the day after I arrived, but I wasn't scheduled to work until July 1st. So, the first day of work I did canvassing, which involved basically going to people's houses asking for money. And EV, I uncovered, has a sneaky way of getting the biggest profits: They keep track of which houses, over the years, have been generously and consistently donating large sums of money to organizations, such as EV. Then, we target these people especially. Once we knock on their door, we ask for double the donation they paid previously (therefore, if they say 'I'm sorry, I am only able to pay half that,' then we at least get the same sum that they had already paid before). Clever, ain't it? And it works, which was the surprising part (I actually saw elderly homeowners giving large sums of money away, even after they had negotiated down, which were still larger than the amount they paid previously)!
That was May 12th. Today it is June 4th. In-between the day I arrived back home and my starting date (which I have changed to June 7th), I have been taking driving classes and lessons, eating very unhealthily, jogging to stay healthy, playing piano and guitar, skyping with my girlfriend, using the internet, watching pokemon, reading books, and playing games. I hope to get my driver's license sometime next week, so I can finally drive whenever, wherever I want!!!
